A facelift, also known as a or rhytidectomy, is an operation that is performed to rejuvenate the face as it ages. Depending on many factors including the age of the patient and the amount of rejuvenation that is expected, the procedure may be more or less involved.

For planning purposes, the face is generally divided into thirds:  the upper, middle, and lower face (which includes the neck). Depending on which of these areas may be the focus, a combination of the following operations may be performed.

Brow and Upper Facelift

With age the eyebrows droop and wrinkles appear on the forehead making you perhaps look angry, sad or tired. Brow lift  surgery is one of the most popular procedures for  40-60 year old patients creating a dramatic improvement in wrinkles and an overall refreshed appearance.

There are various techniques used for an upper facelift which will be discussed during your consultation. Dr. Brownstein often performs this procedure endoscopically using 3-5 small incisions in the scalp, behind the hairline to minimize the visual appearance of scars.

Cheek and Mid Facelift

A Mid Facelift will improve the appearance of cheek area through incisions  made in the hairline and inside of the mouth. The skin and underlying tissue is lifted using internal sutures that are tied just above the hairline. The sutures are important to hold the tissue in their new position for the first 4-6 weeks. Eventually they dissolve when the skin is healed and reattach to the underlying skin and bone in the new location.

Neck Lift and Lower Facelift

A Neck and lower facelift procedure usually involves incisions in front of and behind the ear and under the chin.  The deeper layers of the face are “lifted,” muscles are tightened and liposuction of the neck and jowls may be performed. Excess skin is either removed or repositioned. The results are a reversal of the effects of gravity and tightening of soft tissues of the face to restore a more youthful contour to the face and neck.

You may be placed in a compression garment after your procedure to help reduce swelling and support the face as it heals. Surgical drains may also be used to help remove excess fluid build-up. Typical bruising and swelling may last for two weeks but many patient apply make-up at 10 days and return to work.

Eye Lift (Blepharoplasty)

A blepharoplasty procedure will repair droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle and fat. As you age, your eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess fat may bulge above and below your eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, drooping upper lids and bags under your eyes. With eye lift surgery, your eyes can regain a more rested and youthful appearance.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting can help you fill the defects and regain a younger appearance. It can be used to fill expression folds, sunken cheeks, scars and lips. During the procedure the surgeon performs a liposuction from various body parts, such as thighs, tummy and buttocks, and then injects the fat into selected areas which need to be filled.

Facial Implants- Cheek and Chin Implants

Facial Implants (Cheek, chin, etc.): Facial implants are designed for augmentative, reconstructive or rejuvenative purposes. Available in a wide range of sizes and styles for the chin, jaw, nose and cheek, implants add or restore contour and/or proportion to the face.

Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty, “Nose Job”)

A rhinoplasty procedure can bring the shape and size of the nose in balance with the rest of the face. Not all of us get the perfect nose at the time of our birth but with cosmetic surgery, we are often  able to alter the various angles between the the nose and other parts of the face and change the size of the nose and shape of the tip.

Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty, Ear Pinning)

Ear surgery often is recommended for children as they near total ear development at age five or six. Correction of the ears prior to the child entering school helps eliminate potential psychological trauma from the teasing of classmates. Adults may also have their ears reshaped.

Surgery of the Aging Lip

The shape and size of the lips can be modified in many different ways.
