Breast reconstruction usually involves a series of surgical procedures that attempts to re-create a breast mound and nipple areola after mastectomy. A mastectomy is surgery that removes your breast to treat or prevent breast cancer.
Often breast reconstruction procedures involve the use of breast implants to reshape your breasts. The breast reconstruction process can start at the time of your mastectomy or it can be done as a delayed procedure. Breast reconstruction will not restore the exact look and feel of your natural breast; but, with a series of procedures, the contour of your new breasts may restore a silhouette similar to what you had before mastectomy.
